Scherzer, Mense and Jamieson Continue Summer Action with Team USA

July 20, 2005

Durham, NC - - The 2005 USA Baseball National Team, which included Mizzou's Max Scherzer, Hunter Mense and Coach Tim Jamieson, opens the home portion of their summer schedule at Durham Bulls Athletic Park this Friday evening with a 7:00 pm tilt vs. the Italian National Team. Team USA is slated to play a total of six (6) exhibition games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park this summer.

Team USA (5-4) is returning from a trip overseas where the final three games of their recent five-game Friendship Series vs. Chinese Taipei was wiped out by Typhoon Haitang. The Americans split a pair of games with Taiwan, winning 1-0 before falling 9-7 in their last contest on July 16.

Mense has played in eight of Team USA's nine games. He is hitting .250, including a 2-for-3 outing against Italy on July 11. He has also added a double and triple to his credit. Scherzer has struck out seven batters in nine innings of work as he has appeared in two games, making one start.

Team USA will play the first three games of a five-game set with Italy here in Durham this weekend, July 22-24. Game four will be played in Brooklyn, NY while game five will take place in Pawtucket, RI. The Americans then return back to Durham to face Nicaragua July 29-31 before playing their final three games of the summer - also vs. Nicaragua - down at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Americans have not faced the Italians since the summer of 2002, when they defeated Italy by a 10-0 score at the FISU World University Baseball Championships in Messina, Italy. Team USA has won all nine games played between the two countries since 1996, including a 4-2 victory at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia and a 15-3 triumph at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

The long and storied history between Team USA and Nicaragua is not quite as dominant on the home side. In fact, the Nicaraguans have beaten the Americans twice in the last four years, including a 3-0 stunner during pool play at the 2003 Pan Am Games that snapped the Americans' 25-game winning streak at the time. Nicaragua also handed Team USA a 3-1 loss at the 2001 World Cup in Taiwan, beating a United States squad that was managed by current Boston Red Sox World Champion skipper Terry Francona. But the Americans do hold a 15-3 edge in the series dating back to 1996, including a 10-3 win in the bronze medal game of the '96 Olympics.
