Missouri Wrestling Team Releases 2004-05 Schedule

Aug. 27, 2004

Columbia, Mo. - Ranked ninth in preseason polls, the Missouri wresting team announced its 2004-05 season schedule today. The Tigers open action Sunday, Nov. 14, in Warrensburg, Mo., at the Central Missouri State Open and wrap up in St. Louis, March 19, with the conclusion of the 75th annual NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Throughout the year, local fans will have six opportunities to catch the Tiger wrestlers in action in addition to Missouri's opening dual and NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

Challenging at least six of the country's top-25 wrestling programs, Missouri enters the dual portion of its schedule against No. 22 Purdue on Friday, Nov. 19, at Meramec College in St. Louis. This marks the second consecutive year the Tigers have opened their dual season in St. Louis and 10th time Missouri has opened against a Big 10 opponent.

"At last year's dual against Oklahoma State, we had over 2,000 fans that witnessed our 21-17 defeat of the No. 1-ranked Cowboys," Head Coach Brian Smith said. "It was really an exciting scene and we'd like to top last year's performance with an even larger crowd this year at Meramec."

From St. Louis, the Tigers return home to host the fifth annual Missouri Open in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse on Nov. 21. Over 500 wrestlers from several of the top-ranked teams in the nation are expected to attend the all day event.

With MU's men's and women's basketball programs moving into the Paige Sports Arena, the wrestling team can now officially tout the Hearnes Arena as its permanent home facility. Maryland, Utah Valley State and Southern Illinois will all attend the first annual Missouri Duals held in the arena on Jan. 2. Smith intends to make the Duals an annual event, providing fans yet another opportunity to see the MU wrestling team.

All five of the Big 12 wrestling programs are ranked among the top 10 programs in the country. This season the Tigers will host No. 2 Nebraska (Jan. 29) and No. 4 Iowa State (Feb. 13) and travel to No. 1 Oklahoma State (Feb. 4) and No. 7 Oklahoma (Feb. 5). The teams will come together on March 5, 2005, in the Qwest Arena (Omaha, Neb.) for the ninth annual Big 12 Wrestling Championships. This is the first year a Big 12 Wrestling Championship has been held at an off-campus site. The University of Nebraska will assume hosting responsibilities.

The University of Missouri will co-host the 75th NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships for the second consecutive year alongside the St. Louis Sports Commission, March 17-19, 2005. The three-day event will run in the Savvis Center and fans can purchase Missouri section seating by becoming a member of the Missouri Wrestling Takedown Booster Club.
